Our Story: Caring for the Community Since 1987

Supporting Carers, Families and Communities Since 1987

For almost 40 years, Crossroads Caring for Carers has been supporting individuals, unpaid carers and families across Sandwell, Birmingham and the Black Country.

Although our services have grown and evolved over the decades, one thing has never changed – our commitment to making life a little easier for carers, families and the people they support.

Every service we provide is built around compassion, dignity, independence and helping people remain connected to the communities they love.

Where It All Began

Our story began in 1987, inspired by something unexpected.

Following a powerful storyline in the popular ATV television soap Crossroads, viewers witnessed the daily challenges faced by unpaid family carers. The public response was overwhelming, bringing national attention to the vital role carers play and the lack of support available to them.

This awareness encouraged local authorities across the UK to invest in community-based support, leading to the creation of local Crossroads schemes.

Crossroads Caring for Carers was established as part of that movement, with one clear purpose:

To provide practical support, respite and compassionate care for unpaid carers and the people they care for.

Growing to Meet Changing Needs

As caring has changed, so have we.

Over the years, Crossroads has grown from providing respite care into a charity delivering a wide range of services that support both the individual receiving care and the unpaid carers who support them.

Today our services include:

  • Home Care
  • Respite Care
  • Support for Unpaid Carers
  • Carers Assistance Line
  • Bereavement & Wellbeing Services
  • Family Carer Training
  • Professional Care Training
  • Dementia Support
  • Community Wellbeing Services
  • Advice & Guidance

Looking Ahead

While much has changed since 1987, one thing remains constant.

We continue to invest in our people, develop new services and strengthen partnerships so we can respond to the changing needs of our communities.

Whether that’s helping someone remain independent at home, supporting an unpaid carer, delivering professional training or creating opportunities for people to reconnect with their communities, we’re committed to making a positive difference every day.

Because caring changes lives and so can the right support.
