Celebrating Young Carers on Young Carers Action Day

To celebrate Young Carer’s Action Day (13.03.24), Dudley Young Carers (DYC) hosted a fun family event at The Source youth centre in Kingswinford to showcase to young carers and their families from across Dudley how the team can support them.

Made possible with a generous donation from Carers Trust, the evening celebrated young carers (aged 5 -17) and young adult carers (aged 18 – 25) and the brilliant job these young people do caring for a loved one, whilst giving families the chance to relax and have fun together.

Jam packed with information and entertainment for the whole family, over one hundred people joined in the celebrations, with inflatables, fairground games, face painting, a tombola and craft activities. Plus our local Rapid Relief Team joined us for the third year running to provide a delicious BBQ and refreshments for all!

Jennifer Douglas, Dudley Carers Lead said, “We had a fantastic evening celebrating young carers in Dudley. Young Carers Action Day is an opportunity to put the spotlight on young carers, the challenges they face and the support they desperately need. The theme of this year’s Young Carers Action Day is ‘fairer futures for young carers’ and we want to focus on helping to remove the barriers that young carers often face and support them to flourish and grow as a young person to reach their full potential.”

Penny Haddleton said, “My daughter, Summer, 12, has autism and ADHD and her older sister Codie, 21, helps to care for her. Codie accessed the Dudley Young Carers service for a number of years and is still receiving support as a young adult carer. The support she has received has been invaluable to all of us as a family. Events like this evening are brilliant, and the youth club and school holiday activities have enabled Codie to take a break and have some much-needed time to herself.”

The Dudley Young Carers team is part of the Dudley Carers Wellbeing Service at Crossroads Caring for Carers, who provide an integrated wellbeing service for carers of all ages throughout the Dudley borough, on behalf of Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The teams provide free, confidential one-to-one support with a dedicated worker, education and general wellbeing support, youth clubs, activities in the school holidays and much more, to help young carers and young adult carers from Dudley access the support they need, take a break from their caring role and live their own lives healthily.
