New Day Club For People With Care Needs Now Open for Bookings

A brand-new day club with the aim of combating isolation and helping to improve the health and wellbeing of those with care needs and their family carers, was launched today (Wednesday 3rd April) by Crossroads Caring for Carers with a free taster session.

The day club, which takes place on the first Wednesday of every month, 10am – 3pm, at the Oak Tree Centre in Oldbury, offers a welcoming and safe place for adults with care needs to enjoy a change of scenery, do a variety of activities, enjoy a hot meal and socialise.

Luke McCubbin, Project Lead at Crossroads said, “We have set up this day club, in partnership with SCVO and Sandwell MBC, based on feedback from service users and families we currently work with. There is a real need in the community for people to be given the opportunity to combat loneliness and take part in activities, whilst getting the support they require.

“In addition, there is also a need among carers, who are often family members, to have some respite, although they are welcome to attend too if they prefer. We do encourage independence, but a skilled team of Crossroads Care Support Workers are on hand to assist people with mealtimes and toileting needs if required.”

The day club is open to all adults living in Sandwell and surrounding areas with any condition, including dementia, regardless of whether they currently access Crossroads care services or not.

There will be a range of social activities each week, including crafts, puzzles, card games and gentle exercise for those who can, with staff ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable and fulfilling time.

Ken Hyde, 79, who has vascular dementia, attended the taster session and said, “It has been wonderful. I have played some games, including dominoes which is my favourite. The staff are very friendly, it’s been nice to have a chat and keep active.”

His wife Norma added, “This is a much-needed opportunity for family carers. The day club staff have made us feel very welcome and it’s reassuring to see that it is held in a secure environment with trained staff.”

The next session will be taking place on Wednesday 1st May 2024. The cost of £45.00 per person includes activities, refreshments throughout the day, a hot lunch and care assistance. If you or a family member would like to join the day club, please call Crossroads on 0121 553 6483 or visit our Day Club page for more information.
