Young Carers Action Day 2021

Young Carers Action Day 2021

Administering medication, cooking, taking care of myself, make a bed, have more patience, how to shop, play with siblings, housework. Being Awesome!

Just some of the skills young carers and young adult carers told us that they’d gained through their caring role on Young Carers Action Day.

This Young Carers Action Day our Dudley Young Carers and Young Adult Carers teams – part of the Dudley Carers Wellbeing Service at Crossroads – have been showcasing some of the fantastic skills that young carers and young adult carers in Dudley have developed through their caring role.

This year’s theme is ‘Protect Young Carers Futures’, and we want to help raise awareness of the important life skills that can be gained through caring so that current and future employers out there will recognise them when recruiting.

As well as joining the social media campaign, led by Carers Trust, to share the countless number of skills that young carers and young adult carers in the borough have, members of the Dudley Young Carers team have been having conversations with them about their skills – which included an array of practical household skills – and how these will be beneficial to them in the future. Our Young Adult Carers also took part in a Zoom session to discuss what they have leant in their role and how these skills are transferable to their future.

In addition to the activities that the Dudley Young Carers and Young Adult Carers teams have been facilitating, we’d like to say a huge “thank you” to Free Radio, who have donated 64 Amazon gift vouchers to be given to young carer and young adult carer families in Dudley to mark Young Carers Action Day, in a prize draw happening today (16.03.21).

The Dudley Young Carers and Young Adult Carers teams are part of the Dudley Carers Wellbeing Service at Crossroads. They provide a wellbeing service for carers of all ages throughout the Dudley borough, on behalf of Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council. The teams offer a supportive service to those whose lives are affected by caring for a family member who has a disability or long-term illness, including mental ill health, drug or alcohol related illness and/or a learning disability.

Caring for a loved one can be challenging; physically, emotionally or both. Our integrated wellbeing service identifies and prioritises the needs of carers across Dudley, providing them with access to support and services, tailored to their individual needs to enable them to live their own lives healthily.
